Cure Health Problems with Classical Homeopathy
An Interview with Dr. Pearlyn Goodman-Herrick, a Naturopathic Doctor
By Jaleh

Do you have health problems but don’t want to cure it with traditional conventional medicine? If so then Classical Homeopathy could be the natural medical approach for you. To help understand what Classical Homeopathy is and how it can help you, I have interviewed Dr. Pearlyn Goodman-Herrick, a Naturopathic Physician licensed in California and Connecticut.

Tell me a little bit about yourself.

“I am a Naturopathic Doctor, a Diplomate of the Homeopathic Academy of Naturopathic Physicians who has been practicing Classical Homeopathy for over 30 years. I provide supervision and training in Homeopathy and am an Adjunct Professor of Homeopathy at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. A graduate of the National College of Naturopathic Medicine, I am licensed as a Naturopathic Doctor in Connecticut and California where I have offices in Mill Valley and Inverness. I myself came to Homeopathy after being treated homeopathically by a Naturopathic Doctor who cured me of the chronic exhaustion I suffered from in my 20’s. Thanks to Homeopathy, I continue to be in good health!”

What is Classical Homeopathy?

“Classical Homeopathy is a 200-year-old system of natural medicine developed by the German physician Samuel Hahnmann. Hahnemann discovered that substances in large doses produced a certain set of symptoms, but in minute (potentized) form could be curative of those very same symptoms. Modern physics is beginning to explain this phenomenon. To learn the effects of the remedies, which can come from mineral, plant or animal sources, they are tested on human beings in studies called provings. Homeopathy is highly effective for many conditions, including some, which cannot be cured by conventional medicine, and functions in harmony with the body, gently and with no side effects. It is even safe for children and pregnant women. A rigorously systematic method, homeopathy powerfully stimulates the body’s own healing process to cure illness.”

How is Classical Homeopathy different from the medical care systems approach?

“Classical Homeopathy is truly a holistic system of medicine. Homeopathy sees all aspects of the person–mental, emotional and physical-as interrelated. At the initial interview and thereafter an extensive range of questions is asked regarding your physical symptoms and your emotional and mental patterns. Your answers allow the practitioner to know you as complete human being, In turn, you are provided with a single remedy to support your system. One remedy by balancing a person’s system can effectively cure a variety of diagnosed conditions within the same person. For example a woman comes to her practitioner to be treated for painful menstrual cramps. In the course of the interview, it is also found that she has had asthma and allergies for years and that she also suffers from anxiety. Conventional medicine will give one medicine for the cramps, another for the asthma and another for the anxiety. Because the woman is seen as a whole person, the woman is given one medicine that will effectively deal with all the conditions. In addition, once her system is better balanced and she is feeling well on all levels, she will no longer take a remedy.”

“In addition, people with the same medical diagnosis, because they may have differing constitutional tendencies may each receive a different medicine to help bring them back to health. So while a conventional diagnosis is important, it does not determine the curative remedy. Like wise, people with different diagnoses, may receive the same remedy because their overall constitutional patterns are similar.”

What types of problems does Classical Homeopathy help?

“Classical Homeopathy helps most acute and chronic problems including allergies, asthma. Chronic fatigue syndrome, emotional and mental symptoms, infections (ie ear, bladder), headaches, colds, flu’s, pain relief including sciatica and back problems, women’s health issues including PMS, dysmenorrhea, menopausal symptoms and infertility.”

Can you give me some examples of homeopathic remedies?

“There are over 3000 remedies in use. Of those about 150 are commonly used. Three often-used remedies are Arnica, Chamomilla and Natrum muriaticum. Arnica is used in the treatment of injuries where there are bruises or a bruised feeling. It can be a very important remedy post-surgery. I am now successfully treating a woman who has recurrent Lyme disease symptoms with Arnica; because her chief symptom has been that she feels bruised in all her muscles “as if punched” Chamomilla (homeopathic chamomille) in large doses produces sensitivity to pain and irritability. In tea form, we all know it is calming and aids sleep. In homeopathic doses it is marvelous for dealing with teething children who are irritable with their pain, impossible to please and in many cases are only soothed if carried by a parent. It may be used safely at home. Another remedy Natrum muriaticum (from salt) is one of the remedies in which we see a craving for salt, headaches from the sun, migraines preceded by flashing light, feeling worse at 10AM and a history of grief. It is amazing that a simple substance such as salt, once potentized may have a curative effect on a variety of conditions such as recurrent herpetic eruptions, migraines and certain neurological problems as well as helping to support a person in grief.”

What advice would you like to leave for someone who is considering Classical Homeopathy?

“Select a practitioner who is thorough and committed to using one remedy at a time. A practitioner can never make promises about her ability to help you, but after the initial visit, may be able to give you a better idea about your prognosis. Do not hesitate to ask questions of your practitioner so that you better understand the care you are receiving. Follow up visits are important in order to evaluate your care and to consider whether your remedy strength or remedy itself needs changing. Are your symptoms clearing? Even more important, are you feeling better in general? In homeopathic practice, we are looking for an improvement in overall health. If you are the kind of person who likes knowing more about the remedy you are receiving, it is probably best to resist reading about it until you and your practitioner have determined that the remedy is curative. This way your responses to your practitioner’s questions are truly you’re own and not influenced by your reading. Acute problems tend to resolve quickly, but chronic problems take time so be patient with your treatment.”

Thank you Pearlyn for the interview.
